The Care and Keeping of Bees
Join the River Raisin Beekeepers Club at 6:30 pm on Monday, October 5 to learn more about the ins and outs of beekeeping. Please call or register online at our website. To learn more about the club, visit them at https://www.riverraisinbeekeeperclub.com/.
Flu Shot Clinic
The Fulton County Health Department will be at the library from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm on Wednesday, October 7 providing flu and covid shots. Many insurance plans are accepted as well as Medicare and Medicaid. No registration required. Call the Health Department for more information at 419-337-0915.
Financial Emergency Prep
Stephen Archer from Fifth Third Bank will present strategies to prepare for possible financial emergencies at 6:00 pm on Thursday, October 8, the first in a series of monthly financial presentations held at the library. Please call or register online at our website.
Paper Piercers
Come anytime between 10:30 am and 3:30 pm on Thursday, October 8 to do papercrafting together. Bring your own project with you (even if it’s not paper!) and work with other craft lovers. Come for an hour or all day, your choice. Packed lunches welcome! Registration is requested; call or sign up online. Walk-ins are welcome too!
Meet the Author: Eva Rochelle!
Come to the library at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 10 to meet Swanton graduate and former Board of Library Teens member turned author: Eva Rochelle! Eva will read from her new book Matter of Truth, talk about the writing process, hold a Q&A session, and sign copies!
Cardmaking: Autumn Colors
Get ready for Thanksgiving! Join Anna Geis at 5:30 pm on Thursday, October 15 to make three thank you or appreciation cards. Class fee is $8/person; all supplies provided. Register online or call by October 14!
Diamond Art: Spooky & Sparkly
Celebrate spooky month and make diamond art at the library while enjoying sweet treats, and listening to music on Thursday, October 22. Come at either 2:00 pm or 6:00 pm (or both!) and join the fun! Please call or register online.
Library Bingo Night
Join us at the library at 6:00 pm on Thursday, October 29 for a night of good old-fashioned Bingo! Book prizes and refreshments included.
Tai Chi
Certified Tai Chi and Qi Gong instructor Mark Butler will lead a program from 10:00 am to noon on Saturday, October 31. Dress comfortably and bring drinking water. Wear sturdy, flexible footwear; no sandals or flip flops. Feel free to come in costume as a ninja if you like! To register, call or visit our website.
Programs for Kids & Families
Prepare with Pedro
Come learn how to be prepared with Pedro at the library! Join Pedro and Ms. Michelle at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, October 28 for an interactive storytelling program from the American Red Cross that teaches kids in grades K-3 how to be prepared and take action when an emergency strikes. Please register; walk-ins welcome if space allows.

STEAM Club Events
STEAM Club meets Fridays at 4:15 pm for science, technology, engineering, art and math activities.
October programs include:
October 2 – Ohio Tech Day. Come experiment with all kinds of tech, from robots to snap circuits and more!
October 9 – Birdfeeder Fun. Get messy making your own birdfeeder!
October 16 – Papier-mâché. Help Miss Alonna master papier-mâché (and make a mess)!
October 23 – Cave Painting. Paint in the dark like ancient cave painters.
October 30 – Science Across America: A.D. Baker. How much do you know about science in our own town? Join the Historical Society and StarNet to celebrate A.D. Baker’s steam engine and Science Across America!
Pokémon Club
Are you a Pokémon fan? Then SPL’s Pokémon Club is for you – no matter what it is, we’ve got it! Join the club at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 17 and celebrate all things Pokémon!
Youth Book Clubs
Swanton Public Library offers four do it at home book clubs for young readers in grades K through 12. Each club features age appropriate books, activities and opportunities to explore new stories.
October selections include:
Grades K to 3: Trick or Treat, Crankenstein by Samantha Berger
Grades 3 to 5: Scary Stories for Young Foxes by Christian McKay Heidicker
Grades 5 to 8: Gallowgate by K. R. Alexander
Grades 9 to 12: The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die by April Henry
The library participates in 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, a free program is a nationwide challenge encouraging parents and caregivers to read aloud to their children. Children receive prizes after every 100 books read. Visit http://1000booksbeforekindergarten.org/ for more information.
The library also offers the 100 Books Before Graduation program for students in grades 6 through 12. Participants can earn prizes as they work toward reading 100 books before graduation.
Teen Clubs & Opportunities
Teen Science Café
Teen Science Café is a free event in which teens and STEAM experts collaborate on presentations and hands-on activities, led by teens for teens with the help of an adult leader. Join other teens at 3:30 pm on Wednesday, October 21 to decide what topics to cover; perfect for experimenting with potential careers and more. Raffle prizes for all attendees!
Teen Halloween Party
Come party early for Halloween! Show up between 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm on Wednesday, October 28 and celebrate the scariest day of the year. Participate in a costume contest, play games like Werewolf, and (of course!) eat lots of candy. Grades 5-12.
Club Club Afterschool
Middle and high school students are invited to the library every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after school from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Enjoy snacks, crafts, work on homework, or hang out together. In October, play Magic: The Gathering with free cards and more. Middle schoolers can sign up through the school to attend Club Club at Swanton Middle School on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Prism Club
Wednesday, October 7 at 3:30 pm. Bring an open mind and be ready to discuss favorite rainbow reads, make jewelry, and play games!
Retro Anime Club
Join us from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm on Wednesday, October 14 to watch four episodes of anime! Japanese snacks included!
BOLT Members Wanted
SPL is officially recruiting for the Board of Library Teens (BOLT) for the 2026-2027
school year, and we are looking for enthusiastic students in grades 5-12 to join us. BOLT gives local teens a voice in our community. Members help select new teen books, design library events, and advise on teen spaces. It’s an excellent, low-stress way to earn certified volunteer hours, build leadership skills for college applications, and meet new friends – plus, we provide free food or snacks at every meeting!

Adult Book Clubs
Gretchen’s Book Club Join the local book club at 5:30 pm on Thursday, October 8 to discuss Nikki Erlick’s The Measure. “It seems like any other day. But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live,” (The Measure, 2022). Copies are available at the front desk.
Book Discussion Club
Join the library book club at 6:00 pm on Monday, October 26 for a discussion of Practical Magic and/or The Book of Magic (or Practical Magic 2) by Alice Hoffman, just in time for the recent movie adaptation. “The Owens sisters confront the challenges of life and love in this bewitching novel,” (Practical Magic, 2003). Copies are available at the front desk.
Ongoing Opportunities
The library offers several recurring programs throughout the month..
Chair Yoga – Mondays at 4:30 pm. Physical therapist Dawn Seigneur will lead a class in chair yoga. Classes are $5.00 per person.
Color Me Calm – Monday, October 12 at 1:30 pm. Adults, come and color your stress away while listening to music and enjoying coffee or tea. All supplies provided.
Dungeons & Dragons Club – Tuesdays, October 6, 20, and 27 at 4:30 pm. Bring a fifth edition third-level character sheet if possible. New players, please register on our website’s events page.
D&D Workshop – Tuesday, October 13 at 4:30 pm. Work on character creation, miniature painting, and more.
Mahjong Mania – Tuesdays at 2:00 pm and Wednesdays at 6:00 pm. Join enthusiasts at the library to play this fun game!
Seam Rippers Sewing Club – Wednesday, October 28 from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. Bring yourself and a current sewing project. Packed lunches are welcome!
Fiber Arts Fiends – Wednesdays, October 14 and 28 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Fiber artists of all skill and experience levels invited! This month the Fiends are creating hats, scarves, mittens, and socks to ship to Ukraine in time for Christmas. They welcome donations from others who would like to contribute. Please bring items to the library by October 15, and/or join the Fiends on October 14 to drop off or make something! Both handmade and store-bought items are welcome.
ChessNuts – Wednesdays at 5:00 pm. Adults of all skill levels welcome.
Writers’ Group – Thursdays, October 1, 15, and 29 at 6:00 pm. This is for writers at every stage of their journey to gather, create, and connect. We welcome all genres, styles, and levels of literary mastery. Please bring yourself, your preferred writing instruments, and the willingness to start writing!
Swanton Historical Society – Fridays at 10:00 am. Anyone who would like to join, volunteer, ask questions, or chat is welcome!

Want to support Swanton Public Library? The Friends of the Swanton Public Library help sponsor programs, promote library activities, support library services and needs and encourage the library's continued growth through fundraising and volunteer work.
Membership levels range from $10 for retirees and students to $50 for patrons, with family, individual and benefactor memberships also available.
